Cold and Flu Prevention (Part 1)

As the winter season intensifies and progresses in many parts of the country, many people already feel weakened by the onslaught of cold and influenza viruses.

Some mothers seem to resignedly brace themselves for having sickness linger in their home and rotate through their children until winter ends.

It doesn’t have to be this way. There are many actions that can be taken to prevent the spread of viruses, and to shorten their stay if they do arrive.

Here are a few ideas:

Prevention of Viruses

  • Practice sparkling clean housekeeping and frequent personal sanitation (especially hand-washing!) to kill germs and bacteria in the home and on our bodies.
  • Practice good nutrition to maintain immunity against viruses that would attack our bodies. Drink adequate fluids (likely more than you are presently drinking) and supplement with vitamins, especially vitamins C and D. Decrease the sugar in your diet, which weakens bodily defenses, and increase the pure and wholesome foods in your diet–such as the recommendations in Health for Godly Generations.
  • Get adequate rest, especially if you are starting to feel “under the weather.” Stay warm enough in the house—such as putting sweaters and socks on you and your children—and bundle up with hat and gloves, warm boots and jacket when you venture outside. Most of these things seem to fairly common sense, but people become ill much more often when they don’t follow the simplest preventative measures.
  • Regular chiropractic care keeps the nervous system and ultimately the whole body in optimum functionality. Illnesses can often be prevented, or at least the time of their presence in your body can be greatly diminished, when you are adjusted regularly.

But what if you’re already sick?  Next week we’ll look at some remedies for the common viruses going around this year.
